Change password in DirectAdmin
A strong password protects your hosting account. In this guide, we explain how to change your password in DirectAdmin.
Why change password?
Change your password regularly and especially when:
- You suspect someone has access
- You shared the password with someone
- The password is weak or old
- You receive a security notification
Change DirectAdmin password
Step 1: Login
- Go to DirectAdmin
- Log in with your current credentials
Step 2: Navigate to Password
- Find Password in the menu
- Or go to your profile/account settings
- Click Change Password
Step 3: Set new password
- Enter your current password
- Enter your new password
- Repeat the new password to confirm
- Click Save
Creating a strong password
A secure password has:
- At least 12 characters
- Uppercase and lowercase letters
- Numbers
- Special characters (!@#$%^&*)
- No personal information
Examples
Weak: welcome123 (too simple)
Strong: Tr4velP@ck2026! (complex, long)
Password generator
Use the built-in generator in DirectAdmin:
- Click Random or Generate
- The system creates a strong password
- Copy and save securely
Email account password
To change an email account password:
- Go to Email Accounts or Email Manager
- Click on the email account
- Enter a new password
- Click Save or Modify
Note: Also update your email program with the new password!
FTP account password
- Go to FTP Accounts or FTP Management
- Click on the FTP account
- Enter a new password
- Click Modify
Database password
- Go to MySQL Management
- Click on the database user
- Enter a new password
- Click Change Password
Note: Also update your website configuration (e.g., wp-config.php)!
Forgot password?
If you can't log in:
- Contact Theory7 support
- Verify your identity
- We'll send a reset link or new password
Storing passwords securely
- Use a password manager (LastPass, 1Password, Bitwarden)
- Never write passwords on paper
- Don't share passwords via email
- Use unique passwords per service
Tips
- Change regularly: Every quarter is a good frequency
- Use 2FA: Enable two-factor authentication
- Unique password: Not the same as other accounts
- Password manager: Safer than remembering or writing down
- No reuse: Don't reuse old passwords
