Every hosting account has a maximum disk space. In this guide, we explain how to view and manage your space usage.

Viewing disk space

In DirectAdmin

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin
  2. You'll see your space usage in the overview
  3. Or go to Statistics or Disk Usage

Per component

DirectAdmin shows usage per category:

  • Website files: Files in public_html
  • Email: Email accounts and messages
  • Databases: MySQL databases
  • Logs: Error and access logs

What uses most space?

Common culprits:

  • Large images and videos
  • Old backups
  • Log files
  • Unused plugins/themes
  • Email attachments

Freeing up space

1. Clean up logs

  1. Go to File Manager
  2. Navigate to /logs/
  3. Delete old log files
  4. Or empty them (don't delete, or they won't be recreated)

2. Delete old backups

  1. Go to /backups/ in File Manager
  2. Delete old backup files
  3. Keep only recent backups

3. Optimize media

  • Compress images before upload
  • Delete unused media
  • Use a CDN for large files

4. Clean up email

  1. Delete old emails with large attachments
  2. Empty Trash and Spam folders
  3. Archive old mail locally

5. Optimize database

  1. Go to MySQL ManagementphpMyAdmin
  2. Select your database
  3. Click Optimize table for each table

Increasing quota

If you structurally need more space:

  1. Upgrade to a larger hosting package
  2. Or contact support for options

Warnings

You'll receive a warning when:

  • 80% of your quota is used
  • 90% of your quota is used
  • Your quota is full

With a full quota:

  • Website may stop working
  • Email bounces
  • No new files can be created

Tips

  1. Monitor regularly: Check monthly your space usage
  2. Automatic cleanup: Set up cron jobs for log rotation
  3. Compress: Use gzip for large files
  4. External storage: Use cloud storage for large media
  5. Old content: Remove unused content regularly
